ABSTRACT

Our experiences with the varied weather of the British Isles provide us with many of the clues about how weather systems are driven. We are familiar with the change

in temperature felt when the sun goes behind a cloud. We know that some materials such as wood feel warm, whereas others such as metals alongside them feel cold. Certainly in winter, we are aware of draughts, many of which are generated by cold air falling after being cooled. These small examples taken from everyday life show some similarities to the much larger weather systems that are driven by the sun, in the form of solar radiation.
