ABSTRACT

Standards which are specified as BSEN are European standards which have been adopted as British Standards. The above represents just a small selection of the such tests.

4.2 The tensile test In a tensile test, measurements are made of the force required to extend a standard test piece at a constant rate, the elongation of a specified gauge length of the test piece being measured by some form of extensometer. British and European standards (BSEN 10002 Part 1) state the rate at which the stresses are applied should be between 2 and 10 MPals if the tensile modulus is less than 150 GPa and between 6 and 30 MPals if the tensile modulus is equal to or greater than 150 GPa. In order to eliminate any variations in tensile test data due to differences in the shapes of test pieces, standard shapes and sizes are adopted.
