ABSTRACT
Manufacturing was supplanted by financial services, which, along with the communications and service sectors, became the mainstay of the British economy. Traditional male workingclass jobs dried up and, as the film shows so graphically, many working-class men struggled to find new types of work while coping with the rise of women's employment and economic power, though of course many women were still employed in low-paid, part-time work.
