Any nail smaller than 2d is generally referred to as a brad, and the length is given in inches such as 78 or 3 4 . Nails today are most usually sold by the pound,
although some hardware stores have them in small boxes of arbitrary amounts. Traditionally, a standard full box of nails weighs 50 pounds. That is a very large number of 4d box nails, but not so many 16d common.
