ABSTRACT

Now that we have covered the general concepts of networking, let’s look at some of the underlying components that make modern network systems possible.

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and Internet Protocol (IP) are the backbone of modern networks, including, of course, the Internet. TCP (RFC 761), UDP (RFC 768), and IP (RFC 791) are all separate protocols, but are often used together in a protocol “suite” or “stack,” typically TCP/IP (see figure) or UDP/IP.
