ABSTRACT

The issues will be explored in relation to two much debated examples of recent Nordic child care policies, namely, the issue of home care allowance versus institutional day care in nurseries, and the issue of earmarked entitlements for fathers in the parental leave schemes. I begin this discussion with an overview of the major features of Nordic child care policies that emphasizes both the similarities and the variety to be found across the region. I use Finland as my primary case, contrasting it to its Nordic neighbors, particularly Sweden but also Norway. . . .
