ABSTRACT

We started the book with a brief account of how analysis can lead to the mythologizing of policy. Often, this can be described as a gap between theory and practice. Perhaps more apt is a dramaturgical analogy, where the gap exists between libretto and opera (or, linguistically, between langue and parole, as Saussure might put it). We also have occasion to see this in the distance between the formal and the everyday — that is, the terrain that the analyst travels upon may not be the same landscape that people walk every day.
