ABSTRACT

We continue our discussion from Chapter 1 (remember Chapter 1?) about history and catch up to when scenery started to really take off and come into its own. Playwrights and audiences always wanted more, and the theatre rose to the challenge. We discussed in Chapter 1 the use of the backdrop as it developed during the Greek genre. The Greeks also started to develop a back wall that contained doors for entrances and exits. The next set of scenic developments needed to wait until theatre was indoors or at least partially covered from changes in the weather.
