ABSTRACT
Some of the biggest advances in automated lighting technology have been in the area of optical systems. Computer-aided design of refl ectors, lithographic techniques, and optical thin-fi lm coatings have helped to improve effi ciency, color saturation, and the clarity of image projection. But perhaps the biggest advances, and the area with the most potential for advances, are in the area of light source technology. Years of advances have led to the development of light sources with greater effi ciency, longer average life, and better color rendering. New technologies like LEDs and plasma lamps are taking a bigger role in entertainment lighting because of the need for effi cient, environmentally friendly lighting.
