Some of the biggest advances in automated lighting technology have been in the area of optical systems. Computer-aided design of refl ectors, lithographic techniques, and optical thin-fi lm coatings have helped to improve effi ciency, color saturation, and the clarity of image projection. But perhaps the biggest advances have been in the area of lamp technology-the area with the most potential for advances. Years of research have led to the development of lamps with improved average life, color rendering, imaging, and effi ciency. Still, our most effi cient lamp sources waste more than half of the energy they are fed.
