ABSTRACT

If DMX512-A is the highway on which information travels between a controller and a fi xture, then RDM is the car that shuttles some of the data passengers back and forth. After several years of development by the ESTA Controls Protocols Working Group, Remote Device Management (RDM) was recently adopted as a standard. RDM is a protocol that is used in conjunction with DMX512-A in order to confi gure, monitor, and manage the devices on the network. It is an extension of DMX512 and it defi nes the housekeeping and message structure that controllers and devices on the DMX512 link use to exchange information. After the controller “discovers” which devices are on the data link, then it can confi gure, monitor, and manage each of them by using RDM commands.
