ABSTRACT
The five positions of the feet are part of the European balletic heritage. Although not used so strictly in non-western theatre dance, clear placement of the feet requires clear indications in changing from one position to another. Historically the standard number of positions in classical ballet is five, although some schools include a sixth. These positions are also used to some degree in contemporary dance and in other forms. The most familiar terminology is given here as a guide.
