ABSTRACT

Arm movements can be simple or extremely complex. Each form of dance employs a particular carriage of the arms and a characteristic way of moving them. The stylistic differences result from the use of the following in isolation or in combinations: flexion, extension, rotation, deviation, intermediate directions, sequential movement, movement led by a particular part of the upper arm, lower arm or hand. All these possibilities will be explored later. For the present we will be concerned specifically with natural, unstylized gestures.
