ABSTRACT

The northernmost area lies within the FRG but most of it lies in German-speaking Switzerland. For this reason Swiss German dialects will be studied as representing High Alemannic. However, Keller (1963) and Singer (1965) provide descriptions of High Alemannic non-Swiss dialects. The north-west corner of Switzerland, the area around Basel, belongs, strictly speaking, to Low Alemannic (see Chapter 10) since it shows the retention of MHG k as a plosive, derounding of front rounded vowels, and consonant lenition (Hotzenkocherle 1984: Chapter 4).
