ABSTRACT

The Nuremberg area is often considered a 50/50 mix of North Bavarian and East Franconian elements (Steger 1968: 571); by the definition given above, it counts as North Bavarian and many scholars consider the substratum to be Bavarian (Eberl 1944). Mitzka (1957: 1682f), however, counts Nuremberg as Franconian, as do the people of Nuremberg themselves, following the present-day administrative divisions. There are also enclaves of emigrated North Bavarian speakers around Jamburg in the Urals (Schirmunski 1931) and in New Zealand (Droescher 1974).
