ABSTRACT

Placing heads on bodies involves matching the color and tone of the two. When matching bodies to heads, try to choose combinations that have been photographed from as similar an angle as possible. When the head the readers want to use already has a similar color and shading to the body on which they’re fitting it, it’s a relatively easy job to graft the new head in place. Complex montages frequently require several bodies to be combined to produce the finished character. Taking the head from one body and placing it on another, as in the illustration of Tony Blair for the Guardian newspaper, is an essential skill. There may be objects in the background photo that fall in front of the face; the head and body could be of radically different colors; there could be peculiar lighting on the original; and the grain of the two images may not match perfectly.
