ABSTRACT
I’ve emphasized the idea of absolute aesthetic value and suggested that this might be a useful notion even if it is not “true” in some deep sense, but now I’d like to look a little bit at its potential reality and the constraints it might pose on art. I will move away from a more general discussion of artistic principles here and take most of my examples and ideas from music and from other fields only as they relate to music.
