ABSTRACT
Yoshioka: Modern society, especially in Japan, has been obsessed by “speed.” This obsession is one with the general tendency of modernity to value speed, but it seems to take an extreme form in this country, as if it were the supreme duty of Japanese moder nity to absorb advanced civilization from the outside as quickly as possible, to develop it efficiently inside, and to achieve an industrial success beyond that of the West.
