ABSTRACT

The Analog Fine Printmaking Process The analog printing process offers photographers countless ways of thoughtfully interpreting what they have captured on fi lm. It is not a rote process of automatically translating a negative into a print. The negative is a departure point that provides the raw construction information to craft the fi nal vision. Although printing offers a photographer a second chance to correct for technical errors in exposure and processing, serious defects such as poor lighting or unsharp focus cannot be corrected. More importantly, however, printing gives photographers the opportunity to further express themselves by defi ning their relationship to a subject. If nine different photographers were given the same negative to print, you will get nine different renditions of the same subject. Once a print is made, it takes on its own existence as an object, especially as others interact with it. As Ansel Adams stated, “the negative is like a musical score and the print is the performance. ”
