ABSTRACT

During the 1730s the focus of Bach’s keyboard composing shift ed from suites to other genres, including variation and canon, in which he had previously worked only sporadically. Besides the preludes and fugues of WTC2, the keyboard works of his later years include the Goldberg Variations, the ricercars from the Musical Off ering, and the Art of Fugue, in which he combined canon, strict fugue, and variation in ways never previously explored. Integral to this group is part 3 of the Clavierübung (CU3), which, although comprised primarily of chorale settings for organ, includes pieces playable on other keyboard instruments.
