Stop baths: acid versus water The function of an acid stop bath is to stop development as completely and quickly as possible. This is most desirable with development times under 10 minutes since a relatively small error can make a significant difference in negative quality. One advantage of long developing times is that the error must be much greater to have any visible effect.
