ABSTRACT

Today’s cameras provide very accurate metering pattern systems. Matrix mode is such an excellent choice that many underwater photographers set their camera to matrix metering, select aperture or shutter priority, and shoot away. This is an excellent way to approach your underwater photography and I would not knock it for one moment. As a rule of thumb, when using a macro lens, a 60-mm or 105-mm, I set the metering to matrix. I also use centre-weighted and spot modes with close-up subjects, and to be honest I have never been able to tell them apart – the reason being that with close-up and macro the primary light source is always a flashgun. However, using matrix metering with wideangle lenses underwater, this combination may result in exposures that are sometimes inaccurate.
