ABSTRACT

Digital cameras are unable to record sunbursts in the same attractive and dynamic way as can transparency and colour negative film. Bright highlights of this nature don’t only plague underwater photographers; land photographers also suffer. In response, camera sensors are rapidly improving, particularly with digital SLRs. Some well-known camera manufactures have increased the flash sync speed of the shutter to 1/500 s. This appears to be the key in capturing acceptable sunbursts, as the faster shutter speed freezes the sun’s rays. Nikon D70 and Canon 20D digital SLRs are a substantial improvement on digital compacts and my very own Nikon D100 SLR. For my own personal needs, when shooting wide-angle into the light I continue to use transparency film (Ektachrome VS 100 ISO on a Nikon F100).
