ABSTRACT

In order to process this analogue data within a digital computer it needs to be converted into a digital form. The analogue signal is ‘sampled’ to get specific values from particular points on the curve, as shown in Figure 2.2. Whilst this may appear to be a rather crude process, if the sampling is done often enough, then an extremely good representation of the curve can be gained. In the case of audio signals, for example, the sampling rate to convert them into digital data is around 44 000 per second (44.1 kHz).
