ABSTRACT

Cinematography is concerned with the reproduction of a scene in time by recording optical images at a regular sampling rate, followed by editing and projection. The projected image may be judged qualitatively in terms of image blur and picture steadiness, apart from any optical image evaluation criteria. In order to use framing rates in excess of 500 pps in a high-speed cine camera, the film must be moved continuously and optical means used to stabilize the image for each frame on the film. Prism compensators are also used in cine film editors where flicker-free viewing is given over a variable frequency range, typically 0 to 250 pps. Cine film projectors with continuous film transport have also been designed. A rotating segmented shutter is used to restrict the duration of the exposure to each frame and also limit the effective inclination of the prism to the incident light.
