ABSTRACT

Burns in the color of the lower layer based on the content of the layer set to Color Burn, darkening the result. Practice the exercises for separating color from tone and applying manual sharpening using people own images to see how the techniques behave. Simple modes such as Normal, Multiply, Screen, Overlay/Soft Light, Color, and Luminosity will become their workhorse tools. Lighten and Darken may be useful for special needs, Linear Burn and Linear Dodge will come into play as they have more experience, and Difference might be used in certain circumstances for comparison's sake. The visual result of applying a layer mode does not actually reside in any one layer—especially if multiple layers are combining to produce a result. Whereas Layer Modes are certainly a more advanced way to look at image content, the parade of extraordinary layer powers continues in the next chapter with exploration of advanced blending modes.
