ABSTRACT

Primes are especially good in this range as well, and you can usually get a good telephoto prime with a wide aperture for less money-and less weight-than you can get a good telephoto zoom with a wide aperture. For field sports, you’ll want at least a 70-200 mm lens. If they’re all daylight shots, an f/4 or f/4.5 lens should do fine; but if you’re shooting night field games, you’ll want to invest in something with a larger maximum aperture, like the Sony 70-200 mm f/2.8 G. It’s expensive, at just under $ 2,000, and weighs three pounds, but it’ll get the job done in more places, so it’s a good investment if indoor and night sports are important to you.
