ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to present some hypotheses concerning the connections that existed between the routes of the Malabar pepper trade and the World-System of the Indian Ocean in the sixteenth century. On this occasion I would also like to determine in what way European expansion affected those connections and how much it was itself affected by them.
