Astheseparadigmsclearlysuggest,theformofacaseendingisessentiallythe sameforallnouns,singularorplural.Thevariantsfordativeandgenitiveare phonologicallyconditioned:dative-(n)~andgenitive-reoccurwithsingular nounswithstemsendingin-anandwithcertainnounsandpronounswhichtake theaugment-in;dative-kk~andgenitive-u{f!areusedwithothersingularsand withallplurals. 1Thenounswhichtaketheaugment-inaretheset(alargeone) ofmainlyneuternounsendingin-amandothersdiscussedlaterinthissection; thepronounsareit~,at~.ent~,andeet~.Thesecondformofthedative(in-(n)~) has,asindicatedtwodifferentforms,whichareinfreevariation:-n~- -~;when thegeminatenasalsequence'!:11occursinadativeform,thefirstofthetwo consonantsbelongseithertothestemortotheaugment-in.Theshorterformis notrecommendedbysomenormativegrammariansbutappearstobeincreasing inuse.
