ABSTRACT

W ith today’s rapid technological advances in the quality of digital processes, many fi ne art black and white photographers are making the switch from darkroom enlarger printing to digital processes. For those that are doing so, this is truly an exciting time to make the move! The latest advances in digital printing technology have made it possible to create beautiful highquality prints with relative ease and aff ordability. Although the passionate fi ne art photographer seeking the highest quality will fi nd that the process still necessitates a fair amount of compromise, digital technology does off er many compelling new advantages to the printmaking process well worth exploring. It is, therefore, time for photographers to take the printing concept into a new era, not by replacing the old processes, but by integrating the methodology and tools into a new quiver for the craft. If we look at the digital process not as how we can merely recreate and mimic the silver process, nor at the strengths and weaknesses of each by comparison, but as a new and diff erent format for translating our imagery onto fi ne art surfaces, then we may begin to realize that the possibilities have grown well beyond what was ever thought possible.
