ABSTRACT

Often Confucius has been described as having been intellectually between secularism or agnosticism and divinity. This article tries to clarify what the role of Heaven in Confucius' self-identity was. Before going into this matter, after considering the term 'identity', I shall introduce the Confucian Analects and see how Confucius' self-identity is placed in the source. Then I shall describe some of the main factors of his self-identity, and more profoundly the function of Heaven in it.
