ABSTRACT

Prior to Mac OS X one repair procedure was to ‘rebuild the Desktop’ – the nearest equivalent to that Desktop fi le is a hidden one within most folders that stores the screen co-ordinates of the positions and sizes of windows, icons, etc. It is named ‘.DS_Store’ – the dot at the beginning of the name tells the System to make the folder invisible. The settings you make when you check the ‘All Windows’ box in View Options is stored within the system as the default, with only diff erent settings stored in the folder when you choose ‘In this Window’. The System only creates this fi le on closing the folder, so the System knows exactly how and where windows and their contents appear, when you next open them.
