ABSTRACT

The reading attainment target specified in the National Curriculum concerns the ‘development of the ability to read, understand and respond to all types of writing, as well as the development of information-retrieval strategies for the purposes of study.’ 1 Understanding and responding in reading have been dealt with in previous chapters. This chapter concerns particularly the second part of this attainment target, which, in early National Curriculum documents, formed an attainment target in its own right.
