ABSTRACT
Introduction Language begins with speech: it is therefore not surprising that oral literature , including stories and storytelling, has played a very important role in the history of literature.' However, oral literature has been excluded from the history of Chinese literature: it is only mentioned sparingly in chapters on novels, which contributes to the abnormal phenomenon that the history of literature is being monopolized by the written word.
