ABSTRACT

In this tutorial we will explore how we can manipulate color to create an old film look or a film that has been processed in the wrong chemicals (on old analog technique called ‘cross-processing’). we will also explore how we can add paper textures to further enhance the aged appearance of the project image. these textures can be created with a couple of pieces of paper, some coffee and a flatbed scanner. the first piece of paper forms the background layer for this project and was scanned from the back of an old certificate that had an interesting paper texture. the portrait is added as a layer above this paper background and then a second paper texture is placed above the portrait. this second paper texture was created by scrunching up a piece of photocopy paper and then attacking it with a sponge loaded with strong coffee. the sharp edges of the photocopy paper were then torn and the resulting grunge digitized with the office scanner. a huge range of textures are also freely available by going online to websites such as www.deviantart.com. the supporting website (www.markgaler.com) also has a resource pack with a range of different paper textures and an action for creating that old film look.
