ABSTRACT
As part of the former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina covered some 51,100 square kilometres (19,700 square miles). In April 1992 it proclaimed itself an independent country and in May of the same year became a member of the United Nations. At the same time, civil war began among the three ethnic groups which comprised the popu lation of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Muslims, Serbs and Croats.
