ABSTRACT

The origins of Czech theatre can be found in dramatic elements of the rites and customs of the various Slavonic tribes native to the region. Theatrical history itself dates back to the Middle Ages with texts of both religious and secular works being found in various cities. During the Renaissance, Czech humanist-inspired didactic theatre existed. Baroque folk theatre also played a significant role, with some of its traditions surviving into the twentieth Century. Court theatre too was performed, mostly in foreign languages, at country castles and palaces of the nobility.
