ABSTRACT

The first Hungarians - seven different tribes - arrived in the Carpathian Basin in central eastern Europe at the end of the ninth Century, the accepted date being AD 896. Duke Ärpäd, their chief leader, founded a dynasty at that time which ruled the country for 400 years. The first Magyars accepted Roman Christianity and, under the leadership of King Istvän, organized in the tenth Century a politically independent state.
