ABSTRACT

Located on the southwest Atlantic coast of Europe, Portugal shares the Iberian peninsula with Spain. Portugal has a population of 10.4 million people and a land area of 92,000 square kilometres (35,500 square miles). Since 1147, Lisbon has served as the country’s political and cultural centre as well as its capital. The country’s second city, Oporto, occupies the site of an ancient seaport known as Portus Cale (Door of Cale or Door of Gaul) from which the country itself takes its name.
