ABSTRACT
Turkey has long been a cultural bridge between east and west. Located at the junction of Europe and Asia, Turkey is at once a Balkan, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean country and is also part of the Islamic world. The centre of great historical civilizations, modern-day Turkey is a republic of 60 million people with a land area covering some 780,000 square kilometres (301,000 square miles).
