ABSTRACT

Occupying most of the southern tip of South America, Argentina extends some 3,700 kilometres (2,300 miles) from north to south and varies in width from 1,450 kilometres in the north to less than 16 kilometres on Tierra del Fuego in the south. Second in Latin America only to Brazil in land area (2.77 million square kilometres or 1.07 million square miles), Argentina is bordered by Chile to the west, Uruguay and Brazil to the east and Bolivia and Paraguay to the north. In 1992, the country had a population of 33.1 million.
