ABSTRACT

In the last chapter we used examples taken from the British Airways corpus to illustrate some principles underlying the conversation analytic approach to the study of repair. In this chapter, we focus exclusively on repair strategies used by the subjects in the WOZ simulation study. However, we will be developing themes discussed in the previous chapter: for example, our analysis focuses on the way that turns are designed to exhibit the subject’s alignment with what they understand to be the system’s difficulty with their request.
