ABSTRACT

Microphones are the most critical element in the recording chain. Every sound not synthesized purely electronically must be transduced through a microphone in order to be recorded. There is a bewildering array of available microphones, and each may be optimally suited to a slightly different application. One of the most important areas of knowledge for a recording engineer is the proper application of microphones: selection and placement both require a solid understanding of how microphones work to obtain the best possible results. This knowledge is ultimately achieved through experience, but understanding the properties of the various microphones helps accelerate the process.
