ABSTRACT
A broad political dialogue with China was established in 1994 through an official exchange of letters, in recognition of China's status as an emerging player on the international scene. Two follow-up documents have set down the ED's overall strategy in its relations with China:
• In 1995, "A Long-Term Policy for China-Europe Relations" and; • In 1998, "Building a Comprehensive Partnership with China"
The latter document sets out the ED's aims to:
• Engage China further in the international community, through an updated political dialogue.
