ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of children and young people. In the introduction Tony Booth provides some basic facts about the spread of HIV and AIDS. Then in a series of cameos, Philippa Russell graphically illustrates some aspects of the impact of HIV and AIDS on young people’s lives, drawing on material collected in work at the National Children’s Bureau (see Honigsbaum 1991). There are inevitable omissions. Young people growing up gay and reflecting on the pressures on their identity from the stigma of misconceptions about AIDS as a ‘gay disease’ are one such group.
