ABSTRACT
Paul Howard is head of the support service set up in the London Borough of Newham to help pupils identified as a focus of concern because of emotional or behavioural difficulties. He describes the establishment of the service following the closure of a secondary special school in the borough and the broadening of the notion of support from a concern with labelled and Statemented pupils to a wider group who experience difficulties and their interaction with their teachers and curricula.
