ABSTRACT

In our survey of 10 of the world's greatest video games released over the past several years, we have looked at a wide variety of types of games, as well as of the teams that made them. World of Goo was made by two guys; Rock Band was made by a team of over 100. Development budgets represented in this small set of games we have considered range from ‘food and rent’ to upwards of hundreds of millions of dollars. We have looked across this spectrum of games for commonalities in what the creative teams felt went right, as well as wrong, and teased out specific areas of focus that seem to crop up for multiple teams, in terms of both best practices to emulate and common pitfalls to try to avoid.
