ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the issue with reference to the development of indicators for the Healthy Communities project in Canada. The birth of the international Healthy Cities movement occurred in Canada in 1984, in the wake of a conference entitled Healthy Toronto 2000: Beyond Health Care. The links between World Health Organisation (WHO) and Canada in the international diffusion of health promotion were demonstrated in the First International Conference on Health Promotion held in Ottawa in November 1986. The chapter also explores background elements concerning the workshops, in the context of the Knowledge Development initiative and Healthy Communities project, within the general framework of health promotion developments in Canada. It provides a description of the workshops series, and further analyses whether or not their objectives were met. Finally, the chapter discusses more generally what has been learnt in this process in terms of the interaction between knowledge and practice.
