ABSTRACT

We make artwork because we are creatures of emotion as well as intellect, and our feelings and ideas are intertwined. An idea can provoke emotion; Darwin’s idea of evolution caused feelings of outrage, disorientation, and fascination as people adjusted their views of themselves. Feelings can also lead us to ideas; for instance, a sense of awe has led people to form religious ideas throughout history. Artistic expression is a way to explore and communicate our feelings and our thoughts; we make art because we need to give our thoughts and feelings a form we can share with others.
