ABSTRACT

In more recent films and TV shows, visual effects artists constantly use software to create scene-setting shots. It happens so often now that it becomes difficult to spot every background extended shot. With many of today’s effects-driven and fantasy-oriented fare out there, the problem of getting to location is not so daunting. The real issue is the need for locations that don’t exist, which is of course where the visual effects team comes in on the project. With the need for creating a scene for a fantasy film that is convincing and realistic, visual effects artists often use a technique called background, scene, or set extensions. Most animation and compositing software offer the user virtual cameras. These cameras allow the VFX artist to animate the camera movement in ways that one could never move a real camera. A great example of a use for virtual cameras is to create a landscape from still photos and animate a fly-through.
